Knowing bootloader

eCos is an open source, royalty-free, real-time operating system intended for embedded applications. The highly configurable nature of eCos allows the operating system to be customised to precise application requirements, delivering the best possible run-time performance and an optimised hardware resource footprint.

Most of the time the bootloader we choosed to develop is based on the environment the IC provider given. I wonder what is the difference between them. After see the Comparison of boot loaders on wiki, I come to know how less I know about the variety of bootloaders.

BTW, there is a nice chinese introduction to eCos and RedBoot, here. It compares the bootmanager on PC system with bootloader on embedded system. VMWare may be good to perform some experiments.
