Planex' new NAS

It's said Planex is going to unveil a new NAS device on May 1. (Model: MZK-NAS02SG1T) It processes a new feature which is not found in its former model, MZK-NAS01SG. The new feature enables youtube downloading and could save it to other format for a variety of devices, Wii (FLV format), PSP & iPod (MPEG-4 format).

If I do not misunderstand that, it should be a kind of transcoding. I wonder if it is done be SW or HW. If it's SW, could its performance be acceptable? Besides transcoding youtube format to others, would it permit other possibilities? Does it save the youtube video as two files, one as the original and the other as the transcoded one?

If everything comes as it is said, I think this new feature make the NAS' media server's role more attractive. And making use of youtube must give itself more entertaining.

Using NAS as a TV Program Recorder

There are some ways to use NAS, as for backup, as a media server(iTune, media streaming). Here is a NAS used as a recording device, where specific TV/STB could send programs to. It extends the typical way to record programs in TV/STB's internal disks.

I am curious about how do the programs transfer to disks. Is samba/cifs capable of delevering the traffic, especially when the the programs come to HD? Or if it uses some open protocols, like RTCP(Real Time Streaming Protocol)? Moreove it said the NAS could accept programs wrapped in DTCP(Digital Transmission Content Protection) DRM, which may slightly ease the content providers' nerve.
