What smartctl con do
smartctl is one of the two tools of smartmontools
1. query SMART attributes
See it manual for what do VALUE,WORST,TYPE,WHEN_FAILED mean
2. give a result of overall-health self-assessment test
It may be judged form 1.'s values
3. do self-test on the drive
Possible options are offline,captive,short,long,...
The progress could be find by pollingly use smartctl
4. To fix/makeup the error found by self-test, go find other utilities
5. It's possible that 2.'s result is PASSED but some error found in self-test
